Feeding the birds

Did you know that bread can make birds very sick?

Bread can leave ducks and swans feeling full without giving them all of the important vitamins, minerals and nutrients they need.

Uneaten soggy bread can cause a build-up of bad nutrients which can lead to greater algal growth, spread disease and encourage pests such as rats. Feeding bread also creates excessive amounts of bird droppings which, along with being smelly and slippery underfoot, can reduce water quality and clog waterways with harmful algae.

We've created a poster to help you have fun feeding birds and ensure they stay healthy. Feel free to adapt it for your own local green/blue space.

We've also developed a handy mythbuster guide with more details on birdfeeding. If you'd like a PDF copy to hand out to your own community please get in touch.
